The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) emphasized that these practices create a misleading impression among consumers regarding the authentic attributes of the products.

In response to a complaint filed by the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has issued a notice to Amazon, accusing the e-commerce giant of engaging in “deceptive trade practices” concerning the sale of sweets marketed as ‘Shri Ram Mandir Ayodhya Prasad.’ The CAIT alleges that Amazon is misleading consumers by selling sweets underthe appearance of “prasad” associated with the forthcoming dedication of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya.

The CCPA highlighted that such practices create a misleading impression among consumers regarding the genuine characteristics of the products, influencing their purchasing decisions based on inaccurate representations.

“Facilitating the online sale of food products with deceptive representations misguides consumers about the true attributes of the product. This misleading practice prompts consumers to make purchasing choices that they might not have otherwise made, had the accurate product attributes been transparently disclosed,” stated the CCPA in a release.

The items under scrutiny on Amazon’s platform encompass various offerings, such as ‘Sri Ram Mandir Ayodhya Prasad – Raghupati Ghee Ladoo,’ ‘Ayodhya Ram Mandir Ayodhya Prasad,’ ‘Khoya Khobi Ladoo,’ ‘Ram Mandir Ayodhya Prasad – Desi Cow Milk Peda,’ and several others.

Amazon is required to provide a response within seven days to the notice issued by the CCPA. Failure to do so will result in appropriate actions being initiated against the company in accordance with the provisions of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019.
