Persistent Flooding in Chennai as Cyclone Michaung Causes Intense Rainfall, Leaving Low-Lying Areas Submerged.

New Delhi: Actor Aditi Balan has claimed that she was directed to clear the way for Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin’s convoy while attempting to rescue her stranded family in the Chennai floods. In a statement on her official X account, the Tamil actor further alleged that the government prioritized assisting an “influential” woman instead of aiding the common people in need.

“I was instructed to relocate my car while waiting to retrieve family members navigating through stagnant water because the CM convoy was approaching,” she shared on Tuesday.

“Government, where is your response? I visited Radhakrishnan Nagar, Thiruvamiyur, and witnessed water from nearby areas being pumped into this region. There were deceased animals floating around, and we had to traverse through the entire stagnation to rescue two kids and their grandmother. Meanwhile, a boat with six police officers rowed into River View Road in Kottur Puram to pick up one influential lady,” she expressed in another post.

On Wednesday, she expressed that “no improvements have been observed” in Radhakrishnan Nagar, and individuals are still stranded there.

“Why hasn’t anyone from the Greater Chennai Corporation extended assistance to those in need there?” Ms. Balan questioned.

Numerous low-lying regions in Chennai continue to be submerged for the fourth consecutive day, even as authorities indicate a gradual decline in water levels.

The intense rainfall caused by Cyclone Michaung has resulted in flooding across various neighborhoods in Chennai, prompting the government to suspend power in specific areas as a “preventive measure” due to submerged cables

The toll from the flooding, prompted by the heavy rains preceding the cyclone’s landfall in Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday, stands at an estimated 13 casualties.

Chief Minister MK Stalin visited affected areas earlier on Wednesday, distributing food and essential items to individuals sheltered at a relief center in the city. He also conducted an inspection of the initiatives implemented by the city’s civic body to alleviate waterlogging.

Additionally, Mr. Stalin wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting an interim flood relief fund of ₹5,060 crore.
