“Karan Johar inquired if there was a noticeable gap between you two while working together,”

In the latest episode of Koffee With Karan 8, Karan Johar welcomed his special guests, Kajol and Rani Mukerji, who also share a familial bond as cousins. The renowned actresses, who collaborated in the iconic film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai directed by Karan, were discussed by the filmmaker regarding their perceived distance during the movie’s production. Karan inquired about their dynamics, stating, “While shooting for the film, it appeared that the two of you were not as close as you are now. Was there no friendship or connection between you back then?” Kajol responded, “Not really.”

Reflecting on Kajol and Rani’s dynamic during that period, Karan Johar mused, “I often wondered why two cousins working together wouldn’t communicate. It seemed unusual.” He proceeded to ask, “Was there a natural distance, or were you not as connected with that side of the family?” Kajol acknowledged the existence of an “organic distance” and elaborated, “Honestly, it was a natural distance. When it came to work, both of us were content with where we stood.”

Turning his attention to Rani Mukerji, Karan Johar asked, “Did you sense any distance when you were working with her?” Rani responded, saying, “Certainly. I’ve known her since childhood; she was always ‘Kajol did’ to me. It felt a bit odd. As you grow up, you naturally drift apart, and sometimes you don’t understand why. We didn’t cross paths frequently; Kajol didi used to reside in Town, while we were in Juhu. My bond with Tanisha was much stronger, and it still is. Kajol didi was always closer to the boys in the family – my brother and Samrat da. Yes, it was a bit peculiar.”

When questioned about the reunion, Rani Mukerji shared that it occurred after both of them lost their fathers. “It happened more prominently after we lost our dads,” revealed Rani Mukerji. Kajol chimed in, stating, “It’s a natural progression.” Elaborating on the evolving dynamic, Rani explained, “In families, especially when you face the loss of your loved ones, there’s a shift.I had a close connection with Kajol’s father (Shomu Mukerjee).

During challenging times and moments of loss, that’s when everyone tends to come together.”

Kajol and Rani Mukerji are often captured together during the yearly Durga Puja celebrations organized by their families in Mumbai.
