Odisha Man Allegedly Causes Tragedy by Releasing Snake in Room, Resulting in Wife and 2-Year-Old Daughter’s Death
The suspect reportedly obtained a snake from a snake charmer, deceiving the charmer by claiming it was intended for religious rituals, according to a police officer.
In Berhampur, Odisha, a 25-year-old man was arrested on Thursday for allegedly causing the death of his wife and two-year-old daughter by introducing a venomous snake into their room in Ganjam district, as per the police. The incident occurred approximately a month and a half ago in Adheigaon village within the jurisdiction of Kabisurya Nagar police station, located around 60 km from the city.
The individual accused in this case is K Ganesh Patra, who was reportedly involved in a marital dispute with his 23-year-old wife, K Basanti Patra. The couple, married in 2020, shared the parenthood of a two-year-old daughter named Debasmita.
The defendant allegedly acquired a snake from a snake charmer, deceiving the charmer by falsely claiming that the serpent would be utilized for religious ceremonies, according to a statement from a police officer.
On October 6, he released a cobra enclosed in a plastic container into the room where his wife and daughter were resting, under the guise of it being for religious rituals. The following morning, both were discovered lifeless with snake bites, while the accused slept in a separate room. Initially, the police recorded a case of unnatural death, but upon receiving a formal complaint from his father-in-law, accusing him of murder, Ganjam Superintendent of Police Jagmohan Meena stated that they proceeded to interrogate the accused.
The arrest of the accused occurred a month following the incident due to a delay in accumulating evidence against him. Throughout the interrogation, he initially denied the accusation, suggesting that the snake could have entered the room independently. However, he eventually admitted to the crime,” stated the Superintendent of Police, emphasizing that further investigation is currently in progress.
